Can A.I. Write a Good Book?

You’re a busy person; I get it. You’re asking yourself: Why don’t I just write my book using A.I.?

Short answer: Because you’re a real human with actual standards, and so are your readers.

Longer answer:

A.I. can imitate familiar styles, string together plausible sentences, and even produce an impressive story or argument for a few pages.

But it can’t replace the experience, emotion, judgment, taste, idiosyncrasies, and charm that a human author has. Those qualities are what make human writing feel alive and distinctive. They are what make a book stand out with readers and succeed.

At best, A.I.-generated writing starts to feel formulaic and predictable. At worst, it turns into nonsensical slop. Key details may change from one moment or scene to the next. Character motivations and backstories drift. Timelines fall apart. The plot stalls out. Imagine that across hundreds of pages.

If you want to write a quality book worth putting your name on, A.I. is not the solution. Write the manuscript yourself or, if your prefer, hire a co-author or ghostwriter. Your readers and sales numbers will thank you.

Okay—can A.I. at least edit a book?

Short answer: God, no.

Longer answer:

While editing might seem like a more limited, and thus safer, use of A.I. technology in writing a book, it can actually be a much riskier one.

An A.I. editor will trim words for efficiency, but at the expense of meaning and coherence. (See again: slop.) It will arbitrarily swap out words for “better” ones, but at the expense of nuance and voice. It will routinely miss the forest for the trees.

Real editing requires judgment: knowing what to cut, what to expand, what to protect, and what to challenge. It requires an understanding of tone, intention, subtext, audience, and structure across an entire manuscript.

A.I. can catch surface-level errors and suggest alternate sentences. It simply cannot replace the discernment and strategic thinking required to shape a market-ready book.

That’s where a professional editor comes in.

Did you create that image above with A.I.?

Yes, obviously.
